Summary0000316: Sound handling in (Gz)Doom
DescriptionOk, so this isn't truly a feature request or a bug - but more something I throw out there as I think it may be worth checking out. When I play Doom through GzDoom either my mod or in general on my office PC or most places, the sound is fine - though when I'm connecting it up to the home theatre and plays things surround with proper subwoofers I notice that Doom has Insane amounts of base - way more than any other game I've ever played on my home cinema. I have to actively lower both my subs to -12 DB output (as far as I can lower them) in order to not tear things down while playing at a medium-loud level. forgetting to turn the subs down before starting the game causes quite the heart-shake if the volume is up. I did a little bit of analyze of the sound output from Doom through GzDoom when I play it back - and it seem to have a very heavy bass indeed - and it peaks out below 50Hz.

This picture shows normal play (music volume 0.2, gamesounds volume 1.0) compared to a normal bass-filled music track. - the music track calms off the volume below 100hz a bit, while Doom seem to boost it quite alot all the way til the floor.

When played back at my computer speakers though it also have a sub - it does not sound anything special at all - but through the home cinema that is able to reproduce very low frequencies it shakes things up WAY more than it likely should. I also notice that even if capturing the sound 1-1 the sound-clip actually clips (meaning Doom seem to output volume that spikes through the 0)

Like I said, I don't know if this is something that can or should be fixed, and maybe it's just how Doom's sounds were mixed out with crazy low frequency bass that just never came to life until played on a system that can boom it? but the clipping I think is something that should likely be clamped :)

I can only tell you this: I have stopped using my active subwoofer for anything but actual movies, because everything else seems to have exaggerated bass that sounds like shit.
